Hi! I’m Gee
I’m a multi disciplinary artist from Sydney Australia, trying my best to navigate being a professional.
I love plants, animals, collecting trinkets and exploring the world, but more than anything else I love being creative.
In my art I tend to explore the weird and the creepy, but life is also full of whimsy and it would be a shame to let that pass without embracing it, so you’ll also catch me drawing colourful little cuties.
I’m best known for my black & white work but colour is too much fun to not work with so I do a lot of that too.
Thanks so much for being here, I think you’re awesome.
My StoryI often get asked how long I've been drawing for, and I can honestly say “ever since I can remember”. I was always a kid who lived anything creative, but I would often limit myself to what I saw other people doing. I was never a confident child, so I never really managed to express myself properly through my art.
In around 2018 I had broken my arm and decided that I may as well use my free time while healing to start doing something I used to enjoy again, so I started drawing again. At first it was absolutely terrible. since then just been a constant in my life.
In 2024 I was encouraged by both my partner and some incredibly supportive convention artists to give tabling a go, and in November 2024 I attended my first market.
My StyleIve always been attracted to darker subject matter in art. Whether it's supernatural or psychological, I find art is most interesting when it expresses deeper concepts or themes. I've always loved black and white art, as I find there's less to hide behind. My flowy lines are inspired by the Japanese art of suminagashi, which involves dropping ink into water. I first began exploring inks when I felt disconnected from my art and wanted to FEEL the art again, so I began painting big, expressive, unforgiving lines to challenge myself, and then all of a sudden it sort of became my signature.
While my art definitely has a distinctive look, I absolutely don't believe I've finished developing my style, nor do I want to ever stop it developing. It's constantly evolving and that's something I hope I never stop wanting.
My ProcessLike any kid, I started drawing with scrap paper and cheap pencils, but at some point when I got older I moved across to digital mainly to save space. At some point I became very distant from myself and my art, and took a break from digital to go completely back . I spent a solid amount of time doing “inner child” work with big canvases, paint and only my hands to bring out some of the creativity I felt had been squashed. Eventually I was able to strike a balance between both, and now my preferred process is to start sketches traditionally, and sometimes fully ink them with india inks and brushes, or brush pens and fine liners. I then scan these, fix up any areas that need work and make sure the black is crisp. And that's it! That's the end product you see.
